In these trying times, people are being forced to exercise “social distancing”, especially during this COVID-19 outbreak. Around the country governors and mayors are declaring it illegal to congregate in groups of more than 10. Forced isolation can be a source of great anxiety and can cause serious mental health issues. People need to find ways to deal with these feelings if they are to make it through this. Many of us who ride have found time in the saddle to be some of the most beneficial therapy.
It’s no secret life keeps us so busy we don’t have time to ride as much as we would like. I actually find myself relieved that we’ve been told to change our behavior and that obligations I had last week are no longer on my calendar. It has given me a chance to catch my breath and re-evaluate what is truly important and for me, riding my motorcycle is one of those things. During some of the most trying times in my life, I have found solace on my motorcycle; I would qualify this as one of those times.
Practicing Social Distancing on a Motorcycle
- Gear up. Be ready to have your full helmet, face mask, and sunglasses for a long ride.
- Keep your distance. Stay at least 5 feet away from the next rider.
- Enjoy the scenery and take in all the views.
- Take time away from social media and virtual connections.
- Keep your riding crew small. Make sure no one else is sick before the ride.
While social distancing might be something new to the masses, many of us have been perfecting the art for years! If someone tells us not to come to work or school for a month and not to pool up in groups, we’ll say, “Fine!” and hit the road! We’ll swing by our favorite little hole in the wall that has been there for us for so long, grab a quick bite, and head on down the highway. With each passing mile, what seemed so overwhelming, turns into mere annoyances. Like so many things before, this will all be a distant memory before we know it. I don’t know about you but I am going to take advantage of it and ride.
