If there’s one city that epitomizes the Wild West, it’s El Paso. Nicknamed Sun City, El Paso is where the infamous Billy the Kid broke his buddy out of jail.
Nestled on the border between the United States and Mexico, El Paso is steeped in a rich cultural history, making this terrain the perfect backdrop for long and scenic rides. Before you hit the open road in West Texas, check out these rides that’ll get your blood pumping.
5 Best Motorcycle Rides in El Paso
We picked five motorcycle rides in El Paso that are crowd favorites, no matter what kind of bike you have.
For a full-day adventure, start in El Paso and make your way 300 miles southeast to Big Bend National Park. Avoid this route during the summer when temperatures can go beyond 113 degrees, and make sure you bring plenty of water to stay hydrated in the dry air.
To shorten your trip, you can start off in Alpine and focus your day strictly on the area around the park. The park has tons of attractions, including the Big Bend Fossil Discovery Exhibit, and be sure to check the park’s website prior to your trip to find out about any closures that can throw a wrench in your plans. And whatever you do, don’t skip the hot springs at the Rio Grande River.
Despite its short two-mile length, Scenic Drive gives you a serene escape across winding roads that give you views of the city, Juarez, and New Mexico. The peak of the trip takes up to 4,222 feet, where you can see how seamlessly integrated the U.S. city of El Paso is with its Mexican Juarez counterpart.
Formed millions of years ago from sulfuric acid dissolving into limestone, Carlsbad Caverns National Park is home to 119 caves. To get here, head east on Highway 62 into New Mexico. Alternatively, you can start your trip by venturing into El Paso and making the ride a full circle instead of a straight shot back and forth.
This ride is ideally suited for adventure bikes or bikes capable of going off road. The reason is that several portions of this ride have unpaved surfaces. You can alter the route to stay on paving, so don’t let your bike limit your adventure.
From El Paso city limits to White Sands National Park is exactly 100 miles if you follow this route. With the slogan “Like no place else on Earth,” this park features 275 square miles of glistening gypsum sand that resemble giant waves. Hop off your bike and enjoy the feeling of white sand between your toes, or bring along a sled for another thrilling experience.
Arrive at the Lone Star State’s highest elevation breathing in Guadalupe Peak’s 8,751 feet above sea level mountain air. After the 115-mile trip east, consider taking a “break” and hiking the “Top of Texas” trail, an 8.5-mile round trip.
Plan your trip on a clear day to be able to see the breathtaking views, and of course, bring plenty of water!
