100 People Sick After Chlorine Leak at Vegas Casino Pool

- August 30, 2010

One hundred guests at the MGM Grand resort in Las Vegas became ill after a chlorine leak on Friday afternoon, emergency crews reported.

According to a Clark County Firefighter, nearly 1,500 people were relaxing at the hotel's pool at around 1:30 p.m. on Friday, when a chlorine leak prompted an evacuation of the pool area. Emergency crews treated 100 people at the hotel, while 26 others had to be transported to area hospitals.

A spokesman for MGM Resorts International announced that an injector valve attached to the chlorination system became stuck in the on position, causing the pool to fill with high amounts of chlorine.

The chlorine then started to evaporate, and MGM began evacuation of the pool after guests complained of smelling the noxious gas.

No permanent injuries are expected to result from the incident.
